National Newspaper Week (October 5-11)

National Newspaper week is October 5 through 11, and Traci Gardner has included gobs o' resources at her NCTE Inbox Blog. Among the resources is the article we read as part of the 2008 Summer Institute, so I thought it might be of some interest.

By the way, I snagged the link from the "feed aggregator" in the left menu after you log-in to the web site. I occasionally forget about the Aiken Writing Project's feed aggregator with automatically updated links to resources, so I wanted to remind myself and others of its presence.

Season of Storms

I.     It Was a Dark and Stormy Night

Two---three years ago?  I don’t remember now.  All I know is that this night resonates in my memory as symbolic of what matters most in my adult life.

Our young Zeke---

He’s oh, so sweet:

He let us see

How his heart beat!

National Writing Project and Carl Nagin. “Professional Development (ch. 4, pp. 57-70). Because Writing Matters. San Francisco: John Wiley & Sons, 2006.

Chapter four of Because Writing Matters identifies and illuminates the issue of staff development, particularly through the avenue of the NWP’s technique of “teachers-teaching-teachers.”  The chapter utilizes current and recent research to support the ideas of “systemic reform…” “which cannot be accomplished through traditional staff development models…” (57).

Annotation # 2:

Drew, Simao, J. A. and Brenda G. Bosnic (Jan. 2008). "Uniting the Spheres: Modern Feminist Theory and Classic Texts in AP English." English Journal 97.3, pp.-96.

This article, the joint effort of two AP English teachers, examines the fascinating, yet often problematic concept of gender studies in the high school classroom, so dominated by students’ crises of identity and stereotypical adolescent angst.  The fact that the classroom in question is an Advanced Placement English class provides the authors with a real-world context centered around other-world (the literary past) texts.

Simao and Bosnic attempt to enlighten their students regarding common literary and sociological subtextual prejudice against women, especially as it appears in the “classic”

The summer’s half gone:

Getting up with the dawn…

It can’t be good-bye,

So I’ll give this a try…

The following attachment is a tribute to my loving family whom I treasure endlessly.  They have sacrificed so much so that I may pursue a dream.  I am forever indebted to them.
